How to watermark photos for Instagram so the crop keeps it

Add the mark before you upload: we found no page in Instagram's Help Center about adding one (checked October 30, 2026). Instagram's help page says a ratio outside 1.91:1 to 3:4 is cropped to a supported one. In our crop data, only the centre survives every common crop.

Can you watermark photos on Instagram?

We found no page in Instagram's Help Center about adding a watermark to a photo (checked October 30, 2026). The one editing tool with layers we found there is Edits, which its help page describes as an app from Instagram that allows you to turn your ideas into engaging videos, with layers such as music and text (Instagram Help, About Edits). That page does not mention a watermark.

So we suggest the simple route: put your mark on the photo before you upload it, then post the marked file. Because the mark is part of the pixels, it travels with the picture wherever it is shown.

How to watermark photos for Instagram before you post

In the Fix Watermark photo tool in a current browser (steps checked October 2026):

  1. Open the photo watermark tool and drop in your photos, or choose them.
  2. Under Your watermark, choose Text and type your name or handle in Watermark text, or choose Logo and add a PNG with a transparent background.
  3. Under Size and look, set Size (% of image width) and Opacity (%).
  4. Drag the watermark in the preview to where you want it, or pick a spot on the position grid.
  5. Select Download (with more than one photo the button reads Download each file), then upload the marked file to Instagram.

Free: up to 50 photos per run, and runs are unlimited. No watermark of ours on your photos, ever. Original pixel size; JPEG and WebP are re-encoded at the quality you choose.

The tool runs in your browser and your photos stay on your device. Where to put the mark is the rest of this guide; for how faint it should be, see our guide to watermark opacity.

Instagram photo sizes and aspect ratios

Instagram's help page on image resolution gives the range for feed photos. It says that for a photo with a width between 320 and 1080 pixels, Instagram keeps the original resolution as long as the photo's aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, which it describes as a width of 1080 pixels with a height between 566 and 1440 pixels. It also says it will be cropped to fit a supported ratio when the ratio is not supported (Instagram Help, image resolution).

Instagram's post page lists jpg, png and heic/heif as supported file formats in its computer steps (Instagram Help, post a photo). In the tool, File type under Output lets you pick JPEG or PNG if you want one of those.

When you share, you can also reframe the photo yourself. Instagram's crop page says to move the photo and adjust how it fits within the frame (Instagram Help, crop your photo). Our numbers below assume a centred crop; a crop you move yourself can keep or cut a mark we did not test.

Instagram profile grid crop

We make no claim about the shape of the profile grid today. The only source we cite is a dated product announcement: in August 2015, Instagram said that on the profile grid a landscape or portrait post will appear there as a center-cropped square (Instagram, August 27, 2015). We do not know that the grid looks that way now, so we use the square crop only as a worst case to plan for.

Where to put a watermark so the crop keeps it

We computed, for source photos of five shapes, which positions of a mark stay whole in a centre crop to 1:1, 4:5 and 3:4. The mark is 20% of the image width wide and 3% of the width in from the edge. Instagram's help page gives 1.91:1 to 3:4 as the supported range, so 3:4 is its tallest ratio. We tested 1:1 and 4:5, which lie inside that range, as comparison crops, not as limits Instagram states. The 1:1 crop stands in for the 2015 grid square.

Positions where the whole mark survives all three crops (1:1, 4:5 and 3:4)
Your photoPositions that survive
3:2 or 4:3 (landscape)Top-centre, centre, bottom-centre
2:3 (tall portrait)Middle-left, centre, middle-right
3:4 (portrait)Middle-left, centre, middle-right
1:1 (square photo)Top-centre, centre, bottom-centre

Across all five crops we measured (1:1, 4:5, 3:4, 9:16 and 16:9), only the centre position stays whole for every photo shape. A corner mark stays whole in at most one of the five crops. The full table, with the 9:16 and 16:9 crops and a figure, is in our guide to where to put a watermark on a photo.

Our advice, from those numbers: on a landscape photo, put the mark at the top-centre or bottom-centre; on a portrait photo, at the middle-left or middle-right; and if the photo may be cropped in ways you cannot predict, use the centre at low opacity.

Instagram stories and reels

Reels are a different format from feed photos, so the feed numbers above do not describe them. Instagram's help page says a reel can have an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 9:16 (Instagram Help, reel size and aspect ratios). For margins to keep a mark inside, see where to put a watermark on TikTok, Reels and Shorts; those margins are ad specs.

Should you watermark your photos on Instagram?

That is your call; the Instagram pages cited here do not tell you. Instagram's reuse page says that if your account is public, Anyone on Instagram can reuse all or part of your reels, feed videos, and photos, in features like remix, sequence, templates and stickers, and that you can turn reuse off, including for individual posts (Instagram Help, reuse of media). It does not mention watermarks. In our view, a visible mark stays on the picture if someone reuses it, and a corner mark can be cut by a crop, which is why placement matters.

A visible mark is separate from information stored inside the file. For that, see whether Instagram keeps metadata.

Questions

Can you watermark photos on Instagram?
We found no page in Instagram's Help Center about adding a watermark (checked October 30, 2026). We suggest adding the mark to the photo before you upload it.
What aspect ratio does Instagram keep for a photo?
Instagram's help page says that for a photo 320 to 1080 pixels wide it keeps the original resolution when the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, and crops a photo outside that range to a supported ratio.
Where should I put a watermark on an Instagram photo?
In our crop data the centre is the only position that stays whole in every crop we tested. On a landscape photo top-centre or bottom-centre also survive the feed shapes; on a portrait photo, middle-left or middle-right do.
Is the Instagram profile grid cropped?
In 2015 Instagram said the grid shows a post as a centre-cropped square. We cannot say how it looks today.
Does Instagram resize my watermarked photo?
Its help page says a photo larger than 1080 pixels wide is sized down to a width of 1080 pixels. Upload at least 1080 pixels wide, in the supported ratio range, to keep that width.
