How to make a watermark for your edits
Write your handle, keep it short, and save it as a PNG with a transparent background. In our phone-size data a 10-character mark 20% of the frame wide has a cap height of 1.7 mm on an iPhone 18 Pro. Add it above the video in CapCut or in the browser.

Watermark ideas for edits: write your handle
For a video edit, we suggest the handle people can search for and nothing else. It is short, and it is what a viewer needs to find your account. Our guide to what to put in a watermark covers the other options, such as a name, a logo or a copyright line.
YouTube's help page defines a handle as a short unique identifier that starts with @, and says You can also use your handle outside of YouTube to promote your channel
. For most scripts a YouTube handle is between 3 and 30 characters (YouTube Help, handles). We state no limit for Instagram or TikTok handles.
Length matters because a mark is small on a phone. Our measurements are below; the short version is that every extra character makes the letters smaller.
How big a handle watermark is on a phone
We worked out how large a one-line text mark is on a phone screen, for an image shown across the full screen width. On an iPhone 18 Pro (2622 x 1206 pixels at 460 ppi, from Apple's spec page) that width is 66.6 mm. We assume a cap height of 0.7 em and an average character width of 0.55 em; real typefaces differ, and all-capital text is wider than average, so its letters would be smaller.
- A one-line mark set to 20% of the image width has a cap height of 1.7 mm for 10 characters, 1.13 mm for 15 and 0.85 mm for 20 on an iPhone 18 Pro.
- At 10% of the width the same marks have cap heights of 0.85 mm, 0.57 mm and 0.42 mm.
- For a 20-character mark to reach a cap height of 1.5 mm, it must be about 35% of the image width wide; a 10-character mark needs about 18%. That target is an illustration, not a legibility standard.
As a share of the image width the cap height is the same on every phone: about 2.5% for 10 characters at 20% wide and about 1.3% for 20 characters at 20% wide. In our reading, that is why a short handle in a larger size beats a long line in a small one. Count the @ as a character.
Watermark fonts for edits that stay readable
The font advice in this section is ours, backed by our own numbers. The tool offers four fonts under Font: Bricolage Grotesque, Sans-serif, Serif and Monospace, with a Bold option. At a cap height of about a millimetre, thin strokes have little to draw with, so we suggest a plain, heavy sans-serif and the Bold option; see our guide to watermark fonts for more.
Contrast matters as much as the font. We computed how far a white or black mark stands out from a flat grey, using the contrast ratio of WCAG 2.2 only as a yardstick, not as a rule for watermarks:
| Background (relative luminance) | Mark | At 20% opacity | At 70% opacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light grey (0.9) | Black | 1.61:1 | 8.11:1 |
| Light grey (0.9) | White | 1.02:1 | 1.07:1 |
| Dark grey (0.05) | White | 1.81:1 | 6.10:1 |
| Dark grey (0.05) | Black | 1.22:1 | 1.76:1 |
Footage changes what is behind the mark from frame to frame, and we measured flat greys, not footage. The video tool page says text may need the outline or the shadow on moving footage; in the tool these are Outline and Soft shadow.
How to make a watermark PNG for your edit
Adobe says PNG files with a transparent background are recommended for logos and watermarks
in its Premiere export page (Adobe Premiere help). Our video tool says the same of logos: a PNG with a transparent background works best.
We suggest this order:
- Set your handle in the font and colour you chose, on a transparent canvas, in whatever design app you use.
- Export it as a PNG with a transparent background.
- Check it over a light and a dark picture before you use it.
You can also skip the PNG and type the handle into the tool as text. A PNG keeps the exact lettering you drew.
Add a watermark to your edit in CapCut
CapCut's menus differ between its web editor, its PC app and its mobile app, so these steps are generic and ours (steps checked October 2026):
- Put your video on the timeline.
- Add your PNG as an overlay, or add a text layer, on a layer above the video.
- Keep that layer above the video clip. CapCut's help says a text layer can be hidden when it sits
under another clip, sticker, or overlay in the timeline
(CapCut Help, text not appearing). - Set the colour and opacity. For a text layer, the same page says that on CapCut's web editor you adjust Color or Opacity in the editing panel; on PC it names the Basic or Style panel; on mobile it names Style, for colour or outline. We found no CapCut help page on the opacity of an image layer.
- Drag the layer to its place, and make it as long as the clip.
- Export.
More is in our CapCut watermark guide. For vertical edits, we suggest keeping the mark away from the edges: Meta's and YouTube's ad specs leave the edges clear for the app's own interface, and our guide to safe zones for TikTok, Reels and Shorts has those margins.
Add the watermark in the browser instead
In the Fix Watermark video tool in a current browser (steps checked October 2026):
- Open the video watermark tool and drop in an MP4, MOV or WebM file.
- Under Your watermark, choose Text and type your handle in Watermark text, or choose Logo and add your PNG.
- For text, pick the Font, tick Bold, and tick Outline or Soft shadow if the footage is busy.
- Under Size and look, set Size (% of video frame width) and Opacity (%).
- Drag the watermark in the preview, or pick a spot on the position grid.
- Select Add the watermark and download.
Free: videos up to 60 seconds. Nothing of ours added. Pro removes the limit; your device sets the rest. If your edit is longer than the free line allows, Pro is a one-time purchase of US$29. Your video is read, marked and saved in your browser, and your original is left as it is.

Questions
- What should I write as a watermark for my edits?
- We suggest your handle. YouTube's help page says a handle can be used outside YouTube to promote your channel.
- What font is best for an edit watermark?
- The advice here is ours. In our measurements a 10-character mark 20% of the frame wide has a cap height of 1.7 mm on an iPhone 18 Pro, so we suggest a plain, bold sans-serif.
- Should my watermark be a PNG?
- For a logo or a styled handle, yes. Adobe's Premiere help recommends PNG files with a transparent background for logos and watermarks.
- How do I add a watermark in CapCut?
- Add your image or text on a layer above the video, set its colour and opacity, place it, and export. Menu names differ between CapCut's web, PC and mobile versions.
- Can I add the watermark without an editing app?
- Yes. The video tool adds a text or logo mark to an MP4, MOV or WebM in your browser, with nothing uploaded.
