How to add a watermark in PowerPoint
PowerPoint has no gallery of ready-made watermarks like Word. For all slides except title pages, open View, then Slide Master, add a text box in a light colour on the master, and exit. For one slide, our method is a text box or picture on that slide, sent behind the content.

Watermark in PowerPoint on all slides
Microsoft says PowerPoint does not have a gallery of ready-made watermarks like Word has, but you can put a text background in your slides by hand to get the watermark effect (Microsoft). The method is a text box on the slide master. Microsoft lists that page for PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, 2024, 2021, 2019 and 2016, and lists no Mac versions on it.
In PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 on Windows (steps checked October 2026):
- Select View > Slide Master.
- Scroll to the top of the thumbnail pane and select the first item, the slide master.
- Select Insert > Text Box and drag to draw the box.
- Type the text, such as DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL or your company name.
- Drag the rotation handle to change the angle.
- Select the text and choose a light font fill colour, then make any other changes to the font and style.
- Exit Slide Master.
Microsoft's page ends with "All slides except title pages will have the text", and does not explain why. So do not tell your audience the mark is on every slide without checking the title slide. If you do not see the Format tab, Microsoft says to make sure you have selected the text box. The page also gives text a light font fill colour only, with no transparency percentage, so we give none.
Watermark in PowerPoint on one slide
Microsoft does not publish a page titled for one slide. What follows is our combination of three documented steps, so treat it as our method rather than a Microsoft procedure.
In PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 on Windows (steps checked October 2026), for a text mark:
- Open the slide in normal view, not Slide Master.
- Select Insert > Text Box, draw the box and type the text.
- Choose a light font fill colour.
- Right-click the text box and select Send to Back, which moves it behind all other objects.
Microsoft's layer objects page explains the order: Send to Back moves the object behind all others, and Send to Back > Send Backward moves it one step. The Selection Pane, under Home > Arrange, lists objects with the front one at the top.
A picture as the watermark on one slide
For a picture, select it, open the Picture Format tab and choose Transparency. Microsoft says you pick a preset (0%, 15%, 30%, 50%, 65%, 80% or 95%) or Picture Transparency Options for any value from 0 (fully opaque, the default) up to fully transparent (Microsoft). If you do not see the Picture Format tab, make sure the picture is selected. Then send it to back as above.
To see which strength reads well on a projector, try a few values; our guide to watermark opacity covers choosing one.
Picture watermark on every slide (background picture)
Microsoft's route for a picture on all slides is a background, which fills the whole slide rather than sitting as a small logo. On Windows, Microsoft's background picture page has you right-click the slide margin, choose Format Background > Picture or texture fill, set the picture source with Insert, then slide the Transparency bar to the right to lighten it. By default the choice applies to the current slide; select Apply to All for every slide (Microsoft).
Watermark in PowerPoint on a Mac
Microsoft's text watermark page lists Windows versions only, so we do not say the Mac steps are identical. For a Mac, the page Microsoft gives is add the same image or watermark to every slide, written for PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 for Mac, 2024 and 2021 for Mac. In PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 for Mac (steps checked October 2026):
- On the View tab, select Slide Master.
- Select the slide master at the top of the thumbnail pane.
- On the Slide Master tab, select Background Styles > Format Background.
- Choose Picture or texture fill, and under Picture Source select Insert.
- Choose the picture and select Insert.
- In the Format Background pane, slide the Transparency bar to the right to set the opacity percentage.
Microsoft says the picture fills the background of the slide master and all the layout masters below it.
Watermark in PowerPoint for the web
PowerPoint for the web has no slide master, according to Microsoft's slide master page, so the all-slides text method needs the desktop app. The route is Editing > Open in Desktop App. Microsoft also says PowerPoint for the web cannot make a picture transparent, though you can set a background picture with Design > Background > Insert Picture (Microsoft). We found no Microsoft watermark page for PowerPoint on a phone or tablet.
Draft watermark in PowerPoint, and saving a PDF
For a DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL mark, type that word in the text box. Microsoft's pages we read do not say whether a master watermark prints or exports to PDF, so check a test copy first. If you only need the mark on a PDF, Fix Watermark adds a text or logo watermark to every page, or only the pages you choose, in your browser. Open the PDF watermark tool and download the copy. Free: up to 3 PDFs per run, every page, unlimited runs. Nothing of ours added.
Read more on choosing the word in our guide to DRAFT and CONFIDENTIAL watermarks, and compare the same job in Word.
