Photography watermark examples: name, logo or signature, and how to make one
A photography watermark can be a text name, a logo or a signature. Lightroom Classic and Lightroom desktop both offer text and graphic watermarks, and Fix Watermark makes either in your browser. Which style fits is our advice, not a rule, and depends on where the photo will be seen.

Photography watermark ideas: a name, a logo or a signature
This guide covers three styles. A text name is your name or business name typed as words. A logo is a picture mark, usually saved as a PNG with a transparent background. A signature is your handwriting turned into the same kind of PNG. The pairings in this table are our suggestions, not rules from any vendor or authority.
| Style | What it is | Where we think it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Text name | Your name or business name, typed | Client proofs and social posts: quick to make and easy to change |
| Logo | A picture mark, best as a PNG with a transparent background | A portfolio or gallery, where the same mark appears on every photo |
| Signature | Your handwriting as a transparent PNG | Pictures where a personal, hand-made touch suits the work |
None of the three styles is a promise that a photo cannot be copied. A watermark shows whose picture it is; it does not control what others do with the file.
Watermark for photographers: client proofs, portfolio and social posts
Where the photo will be seen decides how large and how bold the mark should be. Again, this is our advice:
- Client proofs. A text name is the simplest choice, because you can change the wording for each client. We suggest a mark that crosses the picture, so the proof is clearly a proof.
- Portfolio. A logo keeps every photo looking like part of one body of work. We suggest a smaller mark in a corner, so it does not compete with the picture.
- Social posts. Phone screens are small. We suggest a short name, as large as the picture allows, and nothing else. The wording is covered in what to put in a watermark, and the position in where to put a watermark.
Watermark maker for photographers: what Lightroom offers
If you already use Adobe Lightroom, both of its apps can add a text watermark or a graphic one. The two apps work differently.
In Lightroom Classic, Adobe's watermark editor page says to choose a Watermark Style in the Watermark Editor dialog box, Text or Graphic. A text watermark is typed under the preview and styled with font, style, alignment, colour and drop shadow. For a graphic watermark you click Choose in the Image Options pane and pick a PNG or JPEG. Adobe adds that OpenType fonts are not supported for the text version.
In Lightroom desktop, Adobe's export page describes a text watermark added with Include Watermark on the export screen, which starts as your name. It also describes a "graphical or signature watermark": a PNG or JPG file added while exporting. Adobe says the file should have a transparent background and cannot be larger than 5 MB. Because a JPEG cannot hold a transparent background (MDN), a PNG is the safer choice; our guide to the transparent PNG logo explains how to make one.
Photography watermark logo: how to make one in your browser
To put a logo, or a signature PNG, on a batch of photos without opening an editor, use Fix Watermark; our logo watermark guide covers the logo file in more detail. In Fix Watermark in a desktop or phone browser (steps checked October 2026):
- Open the Fix Watermark photo tool and add your photos.
- Under the watermark type, choose Logo. For a name, choose Text instead and type it in Watermark text.
- For a logo, select your file in Logo image (PNG, SVG or JPEG). The help text says a PNG with a transparent background works best, and that your logo stays on this device.
- Set Size (% of image width) and Opacity (%), and choose a position, while watching the preview.
- Select Download for one photo, or Download ZIP or Download each file for several.
The tool accepts a logo up to 10 MB (an SVG up to 2 MB) and shrinks one whose longer side is over 3000 pixels. Free: up to 50 photos per run, and runs are unlimited. No watermark of ours on your photos, ever. Original pixel size; JPEG and WebP are re-encoded at the quality you choose.
To make a signature mark, follow how to turn your signature into a watermark and add the PNG here as the logo.

Questions
- What is the best watermark for photography?
- There is no single best one. We suggest a text name for proofs and social posts, a logo for a portfolio, and a signature where a personal touch suits the work.
- Can I use a signature as a watermark?
- Yes. Lightroom desktop's own heading is "graphical or signature watermark", and in Fix Watermark a signature PNG goes in as the logo.
- Which file type should a photography watermark logo be?
- A PNG with a transparent background. JPEG has no alpha channel, so it cannot carry a transparent background.
- Does a watermark stop people copying my photos?
- No. A watermark shows whose picture it is; it does not control what others do with the file.
- Are my photos uploaded when I use Fix Watermark?
- No. The tool runs in your browser, and your logo stays on your device.
