Word watermark not showing on every page: how to fix it
Microsoft says Word sections are linked by default and each header type is linked separately, but its header pages do not mention watermarks. We suggest checking Link to Previous, Different First Page and Different Odd & Even Pages where the watermark is missing, then applying Design > Watermark again.

Word watermark not showing on all pages: start with the header
On Windows, Microsoft's custom watermark page has you double-click near the top of the page to open the header and select the watermark there. In our reading, that means a watermark added the usual way is kept in the header. Microsoft's pages on headers and footers do not mention watermarks, so every link below between a header setting and a missing watermark is our reading, and we label it as such.
Microsoft says that by default the headers and footers in Word are the same on each page (Microsoft). In our reading, a page that looks different from the rest has been given a header of its own by one of the settings below.
Watermark only on one page in Word
If you added the watermark with Insert at Current Document Position, it is on one page by design. Microsoft says to place the cursor where the watermark should go, then select Design > Watermark, right-click the watermark you want and select Insert at Current Document Position, and that the watermark then appears as a text box (Microsoft, for Word for Microsoft 365, 2024, 2021, 2019 and 2016). Our guide to watermarks in Word covers both methods.
Word watermark not showing on all pages: sections and Link to Previous
In our reading, a section whose link to the previous section is off can have a header with no watermark, so the pages after the break lack it. Microsoft says that by default sections are linked, so a header created in one section carries over when you add a section break, and that Link to Previous connects the current header or footer to the same type in the previous section (Microsoft, for Word for Microsoft 365, 2024, 2021, 2019 and 2016). The page also says Link to Previous is available when you have more than one like section, and that if it is dimmed you should check that a section break was created.
Three details from Microsoft help you look:
- To see section breaks and other formatting marks, go to Home and select Show/Hide (ΒΆ) (Microsoft).
- On Windows, to open a header for editing, double-click it, or select the Insert tab, then Header, then Edit Header (Microsoft).
- Headers and footers are linked separately, so a footer can stay linked while its header is not (Microsoft).
Microsoft documents Link to Previous as the button that turns the link off, on the page that lists Word for Microsoft 365, 2024, 2021, 2019 and 2016 and no Mac versions. In our reading it is a toggle, so selecting it again in the header of the affected section should turn the link back on. Microsoft's pages do not say that in so many words, so check the result on the pages after the break.
Draft watermark only on first page: Different First Page
In our reading, a watermark that is on page 1 only, or missing from page 1 only, can come from Different First Page, because Microsoft says the first page's header is separate: with different first page or different odd and even pages, headers and footers cannot be linked together because they are all separate (Microsoft).
Microsoft says Different First Page is a toggle, and that you double-click the first page header or footer area to work with it (Microsoft, for Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2024 and 2021, Windows and Mac). In its steps for changing or deleting the first page's header or footer, the same page says that after you select it, the content of the header or footer on the first page is cleared.
Microsoft's page does not mention watermarks. We suggest comparing page 1 with page 2 and, if only page 1 differs, applying the watermark again as described below.
Watermark showing on every other page: Different Odd & Even Pages
A watermark on alternate pages can come from Different Odd & Even Pages, which gives odd and even pages separate headers. Microsoft says to double-click the header or footer and select Different Odd & Even Pages (Microsoft, Word for Microsoft 365, 2024 and 2021 on Windows and Mac). In Word for the web the option is named Different Even & Odd Pages and sits under Insert > Header & Footer > Options.
In our reading, if the watermark sits in only the odd-page header or only the even-page one, it will show on alternate pages. Open an even page's header and an odd page's header and compare them.
Microsoft says that if you use options such as Different First Page or Different Odd & Even Pages, each header or footer type is linked separately to the same type in the previous section. In our reading, that means a section can have a watermark in one type of header and not in another.
Apply the watermark to the whole document again
Once the settings are as you want them, apply the watermark again. In Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows (steps checked October 2026), from Microsoft's put a watermark on all pages page:
- Select Design > Watermark.
- Select a watermark, such as DRAFT or Confidential.
Microsoft warns that if a watermark is already on one page, adding one to all pages can leave two on that page. It does not say whether the command writes into every section's header, so we suggest checking the first page, the first page of each section and an even page afterwards.
Word for the web cannot add section breaks; Microsoft says to use the command that opens the desktop app. It also shows existing watermarks but cannot change or insert one, so make these changes in the desktop app. The Link to Previous page lists no Mac versions, so we do not describe it for Word on a Mac.
If the pages still differ: mark the finished PDF
When you are sending a PDF, you can add the watermark there instead. Fix Watermark adds a text or logo watermark to every page of a PDF, or only the pages you choose, in your browser, and nothing is uploaded. Open the PDF watermark tool. Free: up to 3 PDFs per run, every page, unlimited runs. Nothing of ours added.
For wording that suits a draft, see our guide to DRAFT and CONFIDENTIAL watermarks. If it is missing everywhere, read why a Word watermark is not showing.

Questions
- Why is my Word watermark only on the first page?
- Possibly a one-page method or a separate first-page header. Microsoft says Insert at Current Document Position places the watermark as a text box, and that a first-page header is separate from the others. We suggest comparing page 1 with page 2.
- What is Link to Previous in Word?
- Microsoft says it connects the current header or footer to the same type in the previous section, and that sections are linked by default. If it is dimmed, check that a section break was created.
- Why does my Word watermark show on alternate pages?
- In our reading, Different Odd & Even Pages gives odd and even pages separate headers, so a watermark kept in only one of them shows on alternate pages.
- How do I put a watermark on every page of a Word document?
- Microsoft says to select Design, then Watermark, then a watermark such as DRAFT or Confidential. We suggest checking the first page, each section's first page and an even page afterwards.
